Management standards are more important than ever to IT as enterprises adopt standards-based best practices, such as ITIL, to boost efficiency and comply with a growing number of regulations. And as more enterprises undertake best practices, they generate feedback that affects the development of the very standards they adopt.

This feedback sets apart best-practice standards such as ITIL, COBIT and ISO from bodies such as the IETF, IEEE and DMTF. For example, standards like SNMP include vendor feedback, evolve as vendors develop their products. But best-practice standards evolve based on the experience of IT groups that implement them.
