Getting started

New to IPv6 and IP networking in general? Start here. You will find primers on IPv6 that will help to get you upto speed on dig deeper into the technology.

Everything you need to know about IPv6
Primer on IPv6 which covers at a high level the major features of IPv6. It's the short course. If you know nothing of IPv6, start here. It will get you used to the terms. You can then dive deeper elsewhere.

Microsofts IPv6 Learning Roadmap
If you are new to IPv6, this topic can help you identify what you need to learn to fully understand IPv6, from addressing to protocol and process details to application development. It includes prerequisite topics that cover a variety of TCP/IP fundamentals. You must understand the prerequisite topics first, because IPv6 builds upon them and assumes an understanding of them.


Digging Deeper

Ready for the deep dive? These resources will drop you into the deep end. If you are already familiar with IPv4 networking or have read through the Getting Started section, then these should be pretty accessible.

Internet Protocol (IP/IPv4, IPng/IPv6) and IP-Related Protocols (IP NAT, IPSec, Mobile IP)
This a chapter from the TCP/IP Guide, which covers much of TCP/IP in an accessible way. It is the electronic copy of the actual book. The examples are in-depth and useful. Definitely a good reference.

SP 800-119, Guidelines for the Secure Deployment of IPv6
From the press release: As the day draws nearer for the world to run out of the unique addresses that allow us to use the Internet -- now predicted to happen by the end of 2012 -- researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have issued a guide for managers, network engineers, transition teams and others to help them deploy the next generation Internet Protocol (IPv6) securely.

EUI-64 in IPv6
One of IPv6's key benefits over IPv4 is its capability for automatic interface addressing. By implementing the IEEE's 64-bit Extended Unique Identifier (EUI-64) format, a host can automatically assign itself a unique 64-bit IPv6 interface identifier without the need for manual configuration or DHCP. This is accomplished on Ethernet interfaces by referencing the already unique 48-bit MAC address, and reformatting that value to match the EUI-64 specification.

Tunneling and Tunnel brokers

Tunnel brokers allow you to connect to the IPv6 network when your local service provider doesn't support IPv6. You are literally tunneling IPv6 inside of IPv4 to the other end. Most of the brokers are free and are good for testing and getting some hands on with IPv6. These lists are not exhaustive, but we will add to it over time.

Teredo Overview
Teredo is an IPv6 transition technology that provides address assignment and host-to-host automatic tunneling for unicast IPv6 traffic when IPv6/IPv4 hosts are located behind one or multiple IPv4 network address translators (NATs). To traverse IPv4 NATs, IPv6 packets are sent as IPv4-based User Datagram Protocol (UDP) messages. This article provides an overview of Teredo -- including Teredo addresses and packet structures -- and detailed explanations of how communication is initiated between Teredo clients, Teredo host-specific relays, and IPv6-only hosts using the IPv4 Internet, the IPv6 Internet, Teredo servers, and Teredo relays.

Six Access Tunnel Broker page
SixXS (Six Access) is a free, non-profit, non-cost service for Local Internet Registries (LIR's) and endusers. The main target is to create a common portal to help company engineers find their way with IPv6 networks deploying IPv6 to their customers in a rapid and controllable fashion. To reach these targets we are providing a whitelabel IPv6 Tunnel Broker and Ghost Route Hunter, an IPv6 route monitoring tool and various other services to help out where needed.

Security Issues

There are security issues to content with. From additional problems that IPv6 adds to your network to supporting IPv6 in your existing security equipment, adding IPv6 does impact your security plans. These resources will shine a light on the problems and solutions.

thc-ipv6 Toolkit -- Attacking the IPV6 Protocol
A complete tool set to attack the inherent protocol weaknesses of IPV6 and ICMP6, and includes an easy to use packet factory library. Please note to get full access to all the available tools you need to develop IPV6 tools yourself or submit patches, tools and feedback to the thc-ipv6 project.

IPv6 MITM via fake router advertisements
A recent article [1] describes a rather neat variation on how fake router advertisements can be used with IPv6 capable hosts to intercept traffic, including tricking hosts to use IPv6 to connect to systems that normally are not reachable via IPv6.

Let's face it, IPv6 idealists can wave their fists at NAT all they want, but there are legitimate concerns about losing the ability to shield internal address schemes. In this Strategy report, we look into the new security reality as enterprises phase out IPv4.
